Let's Talk About A Poem with Lloyd Schwartz

Saturday, June 2211:00 AM—12:30 PMZoom RoomMalden Public Library36 Salem Street, Malden, MA, 02148

Our monthly online poetry discussion group led by Somerville's Poet Laureate Lloyd Schwartz.

Registration is required and the link to join is sent out the day before the event.

This month we'll be discussing the musical lyrics of Lorenz Hart part of the song-writing team of Rogers & Hart, and contemplate whether lyrics are great poems or poems at all.

Popular songs are among our cultural treasures, especially the songs written by our top composers and lyricists of Broadway and Hollywood musicals. But do song lyrics also hold up as poetry? Or does what we consider a good—even a great—song lyric necessarily depend on the music that accompanies it?  We will begin this conversation by looking at a handful of somewhat lesser-known lyrics by Lorenz Hart, the literary half of the song-writing team, Rodgers & Hart.

This program is made possible by the Malden Public Library and the Academy of American Poets and funds from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
